And the prize for the best excuse for coming to class unprepared goes to...

... the student who recently told me, "Sorry, miss, but I forgot my book at my house in St. Tropez this weekend." I honestly never imagined I'd hear an excuse like that in my career, or that such an excuse would be anything more than the ambitious fantasies of an adolescent. I think it's safe to say that this kid's weekly allowance is more than my monthly salary. I'll stop here before I get more depressed.

More on my return to the classroom to follow soon.

LOL! It's amazing how some people live, isn't it? I once commented to a Taiwanese student of mine that I was jealous that she'd be going home soon to good Chinese food and how I hoped someday I'd get back there again. She literally whipped out her check book and offered to write me a check so I could buy a plane ticket!! (I said thanks, but no thanks!)

I had a college student in a summer class I was TAing who was spending the summer working for his dad's construction company when he wasn't taking classes. He flew himself in his own plane into town every day from 100 miles away to take my class. He had a car parked at the airfield at each end . . .

Now I'm working with families whose kids get free lunches.

Yeah - one of my kids' friends left his science project in the limo on the way back from Aspen last year. Luckily, it being an exclusive limo company, they could trace it, although I'm sure if we'd left it in a Chicago taxi no-one wouldn't taken it either.
